Wolf Shirt Friday: Warrior Post

I figure what's more appropriate on the Fridays that I am bedecked in wolf garb than to talk about warrior things. So in that spirit I have a couple of... well they aren't quotes... more like statements? Well you'll see.

This is an affirmation that I like to recite some mornings, I found it in one of my old samurai books, I am currently looking for the source information and will edit with where this is from as soon as I can locate the book:

The Boundless Heart Of A Warrior:
In this I seek each Day
To defend that which others deem impossible
To conquer what others cannot.
A warrior does not fight for vengeance or glory or fame.
He fights because he has a boundless heart
So that others never know of pain.

And this is something that I wrote while musing about the spirit of combat and how some are able to best others of great skill with ease. What sets them apart? Spirit:

What wins battles are the ghosts of those who came before
Ancestor spirits, guiding our hands and beating courage through our hearts.

Well that's warrior spirit Friday kids!

NaNoWriMo

I'm starting a novel about an actual barbarian in a corporate office, the goal is to have a 50,000 word (crappy) novel in 30 days. Start date is November 1st, and while I can't start writing, I can have an outline and brainstorming done before then... so rest assured I will be hitting the ground running. And vlogging at that point I hope. :D

Keep track of the hilarity here:

Or My Online Progress Report!
[PS: I Don't think either of these will be live between now and the 1st of November]

Who Is Paying Attention To You?

Something happened yesterday to really bring my attention to the question: My CEO started following me on twitter.

"OMZ!" He exclaimed unto himself as he semi-panic'd. What are the possible reasons for this? Is he just following all the BBY kids? Is it because of me saying on teh twitter that he can beat up everyone else's CEO? Is this a fluke? Is this a good thing?

Of course this is a good thing! BJD has an awesome sense of humor and while I may say ridic crap all the time, but there is some good stuff mixed in there that's worthwhile. I will be a little more aware of the fact that @bbyceo is now on my six, so will just make sure I put my really mental stuff in the side feed. ;)

I remain confident that we'll high-five and maybe enact a scene some day about him beating up other CEOs. Here's to hoping I earn a righteous high fiver!

Musashi

I just finished reading a book I've read at least a hundred times in my life to date. I will most likely read it another hundred times before I am done and I'll probably never fully understand it. The concepts that the author brushed onto paper hundreds of years ago in a cave along the hillside of Japan still has profound lessons for martial artists today.

In the Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi lays out the philosophy that lead him to win over 60 duels in his life but he doesn't do so in the same way a teacher today would do. A modern martial arts manual would read: "Do step one, see the picture? Look like that then do step two." But in a way that truly speaks to the warrior poet in me Musashi says stand in a natural way, hold your sword like this, contemplate the meaning of the next 3 books, harness your spirit and you will be unbeatable!

He didn't use marketing tools, he wasn't trying to expand his readership or his school's membership. Musashi lived in caves or in hillside wilderness for most of his life, comfort and riches were not things he cared for. He didn't write for royalties or for fame, he was actually dying at the point he finished his great work. No, he wanted his students to understand... to know The Way. To know that it doesn't matter if you have perfect technique, if you do not have mind, body and spirit in focus you will fail and die.

He lived as I wish to live, unfettered, unadorned and he simply was. When he fought, he did so with his whole heart and devoted his full attention to the moment. He didn't concern himself with life and death, wining or losing, only with this moment. When he decided to paint, he did so in the same manner and created beautiful works of art. He brought that same focus to the moment to the arts of sculpting, poetry, carpentry and flower arranging.

In my own life, I sincerely hope I never need to fight another duel... but I do want to have that same focus in the moment that Musashi used in so many other arts. I have a lot going on right now, and the focus of a warrior is definately something that will come in handy.
